US ASEAN summit is the regional forum held by leaders of United States of America and the ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations).
Purpose of the summit
US and ASEAN have started to build a relationship since 1977, and the purpose of this connection is ASEAN country members are the key Diplomatic, Economic, and Security Partners for the US.
Economic Framework
US and ASEAN connection framework is the strategic economic initiatives around the 4 (four) pillars are:
- Business
- Energy
- Innovation and
- Policy
The goal of the strategic economic initiation is to support the ASEAN member countries’economy, ASEAN Economic Community (ACE) and strengthen the ties between US and ASEAN members.
Security Framework
United States have the program to support ASEAN members through the maritime security and Indo-Pacific Maritime Security Initiative by providing the training, equipment, and cooperative activities to the ASEAN states.
All parties committed to coordinate many activities from maritime security, and counter-terrorism to disaster management, governance, anti-trafficking, and nuclear non-proliferation.
Partnership Agreement
US and ASEAN have signed some agreements such as below:
- The US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, which went into force in 2004, was America’s first FTA in the Indo-Pacific.
- US-ASEAN Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in 2006
- The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in 2009
- the Young Southeast Asia Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) in 2013, YSEALI is the U.S. government’s signature program to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia. YSEALI consists of bright young leaders, 18–35 years old, from Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam who are making a difference in their communities, countries, and the region.

The United States has provided over $12.1 billion in development, economic, health, and security assistance to Southeast Asian allies and partners since 2002 .
Over that same period, the United States has provided over $1.4 billion in humanitarian assistance, including life-saving disaster assistance, emergency food aid, and support to refugees throughout Southeast Asia.
Building on our long-standing commitment to this critical region, the Biden-Harris Administration’s FY 2023 Budget Request included over $800 million in bilateral assistance for ASEAN partners and over $25 million to deepen relations with ASEAN and enhance ASEAN’s capacity to tackle pressing regional challenges.

Result of the summit in 2022
US and ASEAN to convene a special summit in Washington D.C. on May 12-13, 2022, 45th anniversary of ASEAN-U.S. It’s a historic U.S.-ASEAN Special Summit, held for the first time in Washington D.C. and at the White House, to re-affirm the United States’ enduring commitment to Southeast Asia and underscore the importance of U.S.-ASEAN cooperation in ensuring security, prosperity, and respect for human rights.
THE JOINT VISION STATEMENT OF THE US ASEAN SUMMIT 2022 AS BELOW:
EMPHASIZING
Emphasized to the importance of adhering to key principles, shared values and norms enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, the ASEAN Charter, the Declaration on Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN), the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
Emphasized to the importance of creating a peaceful environment for further enhancing cooperation and strengthening the existing bonds of friendship among our countries in keeping with the principles of equality, partnership, consultation, and mutual respect, guided by the principles of the East Asia Summit (EAS) Declaration on the Principles for Mutually Beneficial Relations (Bali Principles).
RECOGNIZING
Recognizing that our cooperation has long been indispensable to ASEAN, to the United States, and to the broader international community, beginning with our first dialogue, in Manila in 1977, and growing with the United States’ signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia; with the establishment of a U.S. Mission to ASEAN, in Jakarta; and with the founding of the ASEAN-U.S. Summit.

Both parties have declared the following components:
- Fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, building better health security, and recovering together
- Strengthening Economic Ties and Connectivity
- Promoting Maritime Cooperation
- Enhancing People-to-people connectivity
- Supporting Sub-regional Development
- Leveraging Technologies and Promoting Innovation
